Swimmer's of the Meet

On December 18 we braved the Columbus ice and headed to Cincinnati for an awesome IMX meet at the Mason Community Center.  We were extremely pleased with our swimmers fantastic performances  with just about everyone trying longer events for the first time.  Kudos to Katie, Nanami, Savannah, Jonathon, Andrew, Sebby, Thaine, Abby, Nathan, Ashley & Kaitlyn!  In the end we'd like to give extra recognition to two swimmers.

First Andrew Huang, age 8,  had remarkable performances in the 200 free (best by 13), 200 back (obtaining an 11-12 JO cut) and 400 IM.  His 200 back was negative split (second half faster than first), showing an incredible maturity for a youngster. And he nearly beat his best 100 back time on that last 100! Next, a huge shout out goes to Abigail Ng, age 13, who has really stepped up her training this year and it showed in a big way.  She dropped over 32 seconds in her three events starting her day with a very impressive 400 IM.  Congratulations Andrew & Abby!

Unpaid Meet Fees

We sent invoices earlier today to several families that have unpaid meet fees on their account. Most of those invoices should have included and explanation and did not.  Here is what everyone needs to know about meet fees.

Meet fees are billed through your Active account to the card you have on file about a week before each meet.  If your card does not work or you do not have a payment method set up then those fees will never get paid unless you do something.  You can view these fees online as early as 3-5 days before a meet at your active portal.  You then have several options that should occur BEFORE the meet. First, you can simply click on the invoice number and pay the bill though Active.  This will include an additional charge of 4.95%.  Two, you could write a check to Buckeye Swim Club for the meet fee amount and hand it in to any coach at practice.  Three, you can pay the invoice through quickbooks, this includes a $2 admin fee per meet.

Please make sure you check your swim portal every week to two weeks.  Do not leave these invoices hanging as they really add up for the program.  We currently have about $1000 in meet fees due from various families.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Congratulations Kaitlyn Sallows

Kaitlyn has been placed on the Ohio All Star team to compete in Indianapolis next weekend  against four other state all star teams.  To make this team she had to be one of the fastest four swimmers in her event from both the Ohio and Lake Erie LSC. Congratulations Kaitlyn!

January 7-8 Meet Weekend

Our 10-under swimmers were accepted into the UASC Triple Crown by the meet host.  Unfortunately, we (Coach Laurie) were slow getting our entries in and did not turn them exactly at the moment entries open.  There was a rush on entries and the meet was overbooked for 11-14 year olds. Thus our older swimmers were closed out and will not swim this meet.  We were accepted into a meet Saturday morning at Worthington.  Our 11-14 year olds will swim there!

Please look for more specific meet information next week, including warmup times for both meets.

Swimmer's of the Meet

Congratulations to all of our swimmers on a fantastic showing at the Bowling Green Holiday Invite.  We were very pleased with the swimmers preparation prior to the meet.  The swimmers were relaxed in the team area and shared a lot of smiles between races.  We had two swimmers set new team records at the meet. Andrew Huang captured the 25 free with a 14.01 and Kaitlyn Sallows shattered an 18 year old record in the 500 free with a 6:03.20!

Our first swimmer of the meet is Savannah Cornelius! Savannah swam best times in all of her events and dropped a whopping 10 seconds in the 50 breast!  She has worked hard not improving her technique which is really showing. Keep up the good work Savannah!

Our next swimmer of the meet is Piper Lorentz! Piper also swam best times in all of her events dropping 5.5 seconds per 100.  Piper has come a long way since the beginning of the year and shows huge leaps forward every week.  Way to go Piper!

Our last swimmer of the meet recognition goes to Sebby Martin! Sebby has worked very hard over the past six months to change his understanding of swimming and his technique.  It is finally starting to show at meets with some terrific drops.  Sebby had four best times and paced a terrific 500 on his first attempt!  Congratulations Sebby!

Keep up the good work and smiles Buckeyes!  We coaches are proud of each of you.  GO BUCKEYES!!

Swimmers of the Meet

We certainly knocked it out of the park at the UASC meet.  We were very excited to see the kids' focus & hard work come together for a lot of terrific swimming.  The following swimmers had personal best times in each of their swims:
Leah Adkins, Sophia Arnold, Samantha Blackburn, Nanami Campbell, Phillip Johnson, Amanda Jones, Samantha Jones, Jeanette Lopeman, Nicholas Mountz, Nathan Reynolds, Christopher Sabharwal, Sai Vidur Senthil Nathan, Sai Vidyud Senthil Nathan and Brody Van Frayen!

Swimmer of the meet recognition was so tight that we had to calculate in practice attendance and percent of time dropped!

First up from the UA meet is Brody Van Frayen! Brody had what we like to call a 'break out' meet, making huge drops in his swims from just a few weeks prior.  Brody is a quiet listener at practice and tries very hard to apply our stroke concepts. Next, also from the UA meet is Sai Vidyud!   Sai swam his first ever 500 free (and in that race his first 200) at UA and also had big drops in his events from just a few weeks ago.  Sai is a diligent learner at practice and a great communicator! Also, from the UA meet, Amanda Jones! Mandy is one of our toughest workers and has been training with speed and a great attitude towards making stroke improvements.  She also had huge drops from her swims just a  few weeks prior! Last, from the OSU meet, Christopher Sabharwal!  Christopher not only continues to have time drops each meet, he also competed in his first mile.  The coaches were very impressed with how composed he was and his ability to follow the race plan - he descended his 500's and negative split the race!  Congratulations swimmers!!

Scarlet Update #2

We are now into our winter routine and are happy to report the kids have adjusted well. We continue to be very impressed with this group and the positive attitudes they bring to the pool.  We have increased our accountability demand and they are responding very well. This is the first group Buckeye has had in a long time that has bought into the ownership of their swimming.  Excuses are dropping and smiles are picking up.

Stroke Progress
We hit on two very simple and very effective freestyle and backstroke drills.  The progress in free was more than obvious at the UASC meet making us very proud coaches!  The backstroke drill was added at the UA meet and is making some impact on their skills at practice.
Our next/current project is adding stress to their swimming. We are pushing them harder at practice, but asking them to hold their technique together.  If they can do this under stress, then they will find it easier to do so when pushing hard at a meet.  We will also start to remind the kids to streamline and kick hard off their walls.

Swimmer Log
At UA & OSU, we asked the swimmers to remember the skills that we asked them to work on and improve.  Interestingly, several could not recall these quickly when asked at practice a few days later.  Keeping a swimmer log book would help resolve this.  After each practice, swimmers should jot notes on how they felt at practice and what went well, what didn’t (can use the commit app for this).  After each meet, swimmers should write down their times, feelings/thoughts and coaches comments on what they need to improve.  For those using the commit app, we will start adding meets into the practice log so they can use this for their notes.  If you are having trouble logging in to commit, please email.

Goal Sheets
Each swimmer should have completed a goal sheet.  We will begin setting up meetings with our swimmers to review these and go over areas to focus on to help them attain their goals.

Water & Shoes
Everyone should have a water bottle at practice.  Everyone should have athletic or running shoes on Monday through Thursday.

Scarlet Positive Leadership Project
We spoke to the kids several weeks ago about this and are finally ready to put it into play.  We would like each swimmer to give a 2-5 minute presentation to their teammates on what motivates them. This can be a video or speech but cannot simply be a song.  If they utilize a song they will need to analyze it further on why it is motivational. We will help the swimmers with their presentation and will approve all before they are presented.  By doing this our swimmer should gain a deeper understanding of their passion for swimming.  This will also give them an opportunity to be a leader in their group and should take quite a few of our kids out of their comfort zone.  Last, we will end up starting each practice with some very positive motivation over the course of 6 weeks.  The kids will receive the parameters for this assignment in writing.

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday Arrival at the Pool
On these days after arriving at the pool we would like our Scarlet swimmers to head straight to the dryland room.  Please take all gear and bags up to the room as well.  Parents are welcome up there until a coach arrives (if there’s room you are welcome to stay & do dryland with us).  This will help keep the pool deck quiet(er) so that coaches can concentrate on the groups in the water. This is not necessary for our Thursday practice as we are first!

Please continue to ask questions of us when you have them!
Go Buckeyes!
Laurie & Jenn

Fall has arrived

Hey Buckeyes - we were so fortunate to have an extended fall with beautiful weather.  Now that it appears that we are nearing the end of fall and the beginning of W-----, we are reminding everyone that we have wet swimmers.  Please begin to use the main entrance to the Sports Club when arriving for, and leaving, practice.

Also, now that all groups are at the same location - with some overlap in start and end times - please remind your swimmers to be respectful of the groups still in the water who need to be able to hear the coaches.  Swimmers should put their bags on the North (step) side of the pool.  Parents, we are asking that you please use the South side or deep end of the pool and not the shallow end.  The shallow end gets very crowded with swimmers, equipment, and coaches.  You are always welcome to bring your own chair to practice if you are worried that there may not be enough seating.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers for some GREAT swims at our first meets of the season!

Thanks everyone.
