Have your strokes analyzed by Missy Franklin's coach!

Hello Swim Families!

Fitter and Faster is coming to Columbus for an Elite Video Filming and Analysis Day at the Columbus School for Girls on April 20th!

At this event, each swimmer’s stroke will be filmed with high quality cameras both above and below the water. Then the video will be analyzed with voice over and graphics on the actual video by Olympic Coach Todd Schmitz. Schmitz has coached six swimmers to Olympic teams – including Olympic superstar Missy Franklin from the time she was 9-years old through the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Swimmers can have one, two, or ALL FOUR strokes analyzed! Each participant will also receive one free month of Swim Videos on Demand!

We strongly recommend all of our swimmers take advantage of this incredible opportunity and share the video with their coach as well! Click the link to learn more and sign up before the sessions fill up!

Communication & Social Media - Follow Us!

We have a few social media platforms that we use regularly to communicate with you.  Please make sure you are following us to stay up to date. Our top 3 platforms are:

Slack:  Slack is our newest platform and is an app that we use to get quick communication to everyone.  Full slack instructions will be at the end of this post.

Instagram https://www.instagram.com/buckeyeswim/ - we use Instagram to recognize our swimmers
Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BuckeyeSwimming/ - Facebook will automatically post our Instagram posts, plus we will share useful swimming articles.

Google Calendars - we recommend you follow our google calendars on your smartphone.  We have recently split the calendars into specific group calendars to help you see only the events in your specific groups:
Senior, Junior & NPG
Scarlet 2 & Gold
Scarlet 1
Scarlet 3
Silver Competition
Silver Recreation
Intro to Swim Team
Meets & Events

Many of the calendars above have yet to be updated to our website.  Only Senior and the Meet calendar have events on them as of the creation of this post.  All of these will be updated in the coming weeks.

Twitter https://twitter.com/buckeyeswimming We are not actually on twitter often, however many of our posts will auto post there as a convenience to those of you that use this platform.

E-Mail:
General team news - we send weekly emails through the help of Blogger and MailChimp.  This post was written in blogger and can be seen quickly by subscribing to our blog. Mail Chimp will compile all new blog posts each week and send you a weekly email. Those come from Laurie's email address (laurie@bkyswim,com) and can be replied to. The blog posts also are displayed on our website at https://buckeyeswimclub.com/team-news

Specific Group E-Mails, Meet Sign-Ups and Specific Meet Information:
We use our registration system (Active) to send all emails specific to a group or meet.  These come from the no-reply@active.com email address that will need to be added to your safe sender list.

Website we primarily use our website as a marketing platform.  However, you can get team news, calendars, season information and other updates there.  At some point we will start embedding slack feeds as well.

What is Slack?
We’re glad you asked! Slack is a collaboration hub that connects your organization — all the pieces and the people — so you can get things done.

Why use Slack?
  • Collaborate online just like you would in person.
  • Bring the right people and information together in one place.
  • Communicate efficiently, stay connected, and get things done faster.
Channels
Slack is comprised of channels: a single place for messaging, tools, and files. Most of your communication with other members will happen in channels.

They can be organized around anything — departments, projects, or even office locations — and you can create as many channels as you need. Every workspace starts with two by default: a #general channel and a #random channel.

Channel types
👀Public Channels
  • Public channels are open to your entire workspace.
  • Messages are archived in Slack and searchable by all members, except guests.
  • A public channel has a # hashtag icon in its name.
🙈Private Channels
  • Private channels are not open to your entire workspace.
  • You have to be invited to view and participate in the channel's discussion.
  • A private channel has a  lock icon in its name.
Slack Best Practices
The first responses we received was a desire to keep important announcements in one place.  To do this we changed the name of the #general folder to #team-announcements.  The only things posted there should be time sensitive information that the entire team needs.  Please adhere to this, so that everyone keeps their notifications on for this channel.

We have the following additional channels to help communicate with smaller groups of people.
Group Channels
#Scarlet (Scarlet 1, 2, 3 & Gold), #Silver (Silver Comp, Rec and Intro) & #Senior (Senior, Junior & NPG).  These channels will auto pull the practice schedule off our team calendar each week.  It is a long pull, but easy to scroll right on past if you aren't interested in reading it.  These folders will also automatically post as soon as I make a change to a practice on our google calendar.  So if a practice is canceled you'll see a post come up much like this:

Scarlet APP [9:06 AM]
Calendar event was cancelled
Scarlet 1 Bonus Practice
Feb 23 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Columbus North Athletic Club, 888 E Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43229, USA

Swim Meets
#swim-meets
In the week leading up to the meet we will post any updates such as psych sheets and warm-up schedules.

Pictures

This is a safe place to throw any pictures from team events, practices, etc.

Everything Else
#random
Anything you feel like sharing can go here.  This channel was used to find a team suit this past week-end.  Great use of Slack!

MANAGING NOTIFICATIONS
Not everyone wants Slack pinging every time something is posted.  You can change your notifications based on what is important to you.  We think it is a good idea to keep notifications turned on for #team-announcements.  Your teammates will get better at using it wisely as we learn.

To manage your notifications go into your settings (swipe left on iOS, tap the three dots on Android) tap notifications then choose your preferences.  You can set different notifications for mobile and desktop.  You can also have notifications emailed to you.

DO NOT DISTURB HOURS
Our do not disturb hours are currently set for 9 pm to 8 am.  Notifications do not go out between those hours.

Pictures Needed

Our Instagram project is now well underway and is receiving a lot of positive feedback. Please help us by participating. Simply send in a picture of your swimmer with their answer to one question within each of the two following sets of questions:

1) What was your favorite moment this season? What do you like best about Buckeye? What is their favorite part of going to part of practice?

2) what is their favorite meet food? Favorite animal? Favorite thing to do besides swimming?

You may email Laurie at laurie@bkyswim.com

Thanks!

Spring and Summer packet is now available

The Spring and Summer packet has been uploaded to our website.
You can download it here

The biggest change in schedule is to Scarlet 1.  We would like to challenge this groups with training that is similar to the Scarlet 2 group.  Some of their practices have been moved to align with Scarlet 2 training times.

We have no large move ups planned at this time, but will speak to individuals over the break about ways to enhance their training or if we believe it is time to move up.

The pool was scheduled to be repaired again the week of April 1.  They have bumped this schedule up and will try to complete the repairs in March.  This will allow our senior program back into the sports club April 1.  If they cannot complete the repairs the senior program will rent elsewhere.

Slack Best Practices

First, thank you to everyone for adopting Slack so readily and providing feedback for what you do and do not like about the app.  We still have a lot to learn about how to best use it and your feedback is helping tremendously.

Video and Pics Needed

We are working on a  motivational video for the end of the season.  Please send in any pictures you have of your swimmers at meets, swimming at meets or celebrating a finish.  Would also love video of starts or finishes.  You can send these too laurie@bkyswim.com.  Large files should be uploaded and shared via an online share site.

Everyone Swims

Everyone can swim a championship meet!  It is a great way to celebrate a long season of hard work and dedication.  Here is your Championship season guide:

Regionals, February 22-24: for swimmers age 9-14.  Do not need to have prior event experience. Cannot be faster than JO cut in an event you wish to swim.  The meet is held at Ohio State.  There are three Regional meets in Columbus, making each meet a reasonable size and not too overwhelming.  Each day holds preliminary competition in the morning (including Friday).  The fastest 16 swimmers from preliminaries swim at night in the Finals.  SOME events are timed final, meaning you only have one opportunity to swim the event, with the fastest entries automatically advancing to finals.  * and younger swimmers can swim, but it is not recommended unless the swimmer is interested in longer events.

Mini Meet, March 2-3:  This is a meet just for 8-unders!  It is held at Worthington and separates the kids into 3 age groups: 6-under, 7 and 8.  It is a super crowded meet, but well worth the opportunity to finish the season with 8 and under swimmers.  Every swimmer gets a trophy and a candy bar.  The meet is named after Coach Laurie's youth coach, Barbara Kay.

Auburn trip, March 1-3:  This is a senior (high school) group meet held at Auburn University.  We love it because it is a great way for our seniors to swim in one place, in a  fast pool without breaking the bank.  There are no time standards which means all of our swimmers can be included. In order to reduce the cost it is a team travel meet.

Ohio JO Championships, March 8-10:  This is considered State Champs for our age group swimmers and is open to any 14-under that has a JO Cut.  Our team regularly finishes in our division in the top 3 as a tea. It will be held at Ohio State this year.  If you are not swimming please consider attending to cheer on our swimmers.  Other teams have massive groups in the stands, we would love some of the same support!

Speedo Sectionals, March 28-21:  This meet is the first stage of national level swimming for our Senior swimmers. Swimmers must have a sectional cut to participate.  This years meet will be held at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Welcome Back!

We are thrilled to have everyone back from the holidays!  We hope everyone had a great break filled with family and swimming :)

We have some minor changes to the practice schedule this winter which affects all groups except Senior/Junior/NPG.  These changes are based on when we have the most available coaching for our younger swimmers, which will help us hone our focus on technique and speed headed into Championships.  We are 7 weeks from Regionals!

Our adjustments are detailed in our team practice calendar which is on our website (always click more to get a better view of the week ahead) and have been updated on the info pdf. These changes put the majority of our swimmers at times when we have two or more coaches on deck.  A summary of the changes:

Mondays - no change

Tuesdays - Scarlet 1 moves to 7-8:30, no Silver Comp,no Silver Rec,  no Scarlet 3, no change to Scarlet 2 and Gold.

Weds - Scarlet 1 and Silver Comp at 5:45, Scarlet 2 at 6:15 for a longer dry land, Intro at 6:30, Scarlet 3 at 7:00, no change to Silver Rec and Scarlet Gold.

Thursday - no Intro, all other groups no change.

Saturday - add a bonus practice from 9-10 for Scarlet 1 (if you want to get an extra technique day in this is the day for you). Watch for occasional bonus practices for scarlet 2.

Sunday - add a bonus practice for Silver Comp from 3:30-4:30

Laurie will be at the pool at 5:45 this Tuesday and will give anyone a practice that cannot make a change to their schedule on short notice.

Have your strokes analyzed by Missy Franklin's coach!
