Our friends at Unified Aquatic Club is hosting the next Fitter & Faster clinic in Columbus. Not only does it look like a terrific clinic, but I think it'd be great for us to go support another small team!
This clinic coming up will be led by two Olympians and will focus on fast freestyle, butterfly and underwater dolphin kicking. The producer of the clinics (Fitter and Faster Swim Tour) has provided me with a discount code for our swim families to use. Sign up today and use discount code: COLUMBUS to save 10% on the registrations. The code stops working in 3 days (July 30th).
Elite clinicians, Christine Magnuson and Peter Vanderkaay, are leading two clinics to teach participants how to maintain proper body position for butterfly with excellent rhythm and tempo! PLUS, learn how to make the most of your streamline and underwater kicking to give you the edge on your competition!
Click the links below to learn more and to sign up before the clinics are promoted to the public:
Ages 11 & under: Fast Freestyle, Butterfly and Underwater Dolphin Kicking
Ages 12 & up: High Performance Freestyle, Butterfly and Underwater Dolphin Kicking
This is a terrific opportunity for us to learn and have a fun day.
All swimmers should have turned in their $150 fundraising fee by this evening. Please make checks payable to Buckeye Swim Boosters.
Congratulations to those of you that raised above & beyond the requirement! So far nine swimmers (& coach Lew) have turned in their pledges, bringing our total to $1500 on a goal of $7500. We'll send out a detailed list of results next week. Keep up the good work Buckeyes!
The team had a stellar showing at the Ohio JO Championships this past weekend.
Ashley Sallows competed in the 400 IM, earning a personal best.
Thaine Nederveld competed in his first meet as a teenager. After earning all of his cuts as a 12 yr old, Thaine 'aged up' celebrating his birthday on Monday. Thaine was impressively poised & earned best times in the 200 br & 400 IM.
Will Magee competed in the 50 back & dropped 4 seconds!
Andrew Huang competed in seven events, with best times in 5, top 8 finishes in two events and three new team records! Andrew cleared Chase Swearingens 100 back, 100 br and 200 IM!
Kaitlyn Sallows swam 7 events, earned 7 best times and picked up three new zone cuts in the 50 free, 100 free & 50 back! Kaitlyn placed in several events with a top place of 4th in the 200 free!
Elizabeth Intihar swam her last meet as an age grouper, turning 15 at the meet. She picked up three best times and had a huge drop in the 400 free, earning a sectional cut and 4th place! Elizabeth broke Kristen Sivard's team record from twenty years ago. Kristen was a terrific freestyler that went on to swim for Miami!

Friday RED (goal digger)
Saturday GRAY (swimions)
Sunday pink or black
Just a reminder to stay hydrated throughout the day. This could be a long, hot meet. Smart swimmers that stay hydrated & out of the sun will have the advantage.
The team has had a terrific spring & summer of training with lots of new & effective stroke changes. We are looking forward to & expecting a lot of very fast swims from our swimmers. However, not all races come together as planned & sometimes we are left disappointed.
No matter how you feel about your swim, your swimmer or your coach please remember to have kind words in the team area and around teammates. We look forward to a fun and fast meet, however disappointments could happen. Let's handle those with grace.
When posting anything to social media this weekend please include #swimions in your post
Our new website is now live! Please take a moment to peruse & play.
We also have a new registration & payment system provided by active.com and our friends at Hy-tek (the makers of meet mobile). As soon as you've registered for spring we will deactivate your billing at TeamUnify (buckeyeswimclub.com)

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."I'm in deep thought this morning as I was reminded a few times over the week-end, the power of a kind word. For those that were at the meet and sent yours kids to the bullpen, the OSSC ladies that ran it did a wonderful job. They had an easy going demeanor, never shouted at the kids and calmly got them through the crowds and to the blocks on time. I noticed. While picking up my heat sheets Saturday night, I was greeted by the staffer at OSU that 'kicked' us out of the Mike Peppe for asking a question or two (although at the time she acknowledged our timely entry and polite demeanor throughout the entire in/out debacle). As she greeted me, a choice few complaints about the meet raced through my head (the meet was an exhausting one to coach), but out of my mouth came the most important thing for me to relay - the one thing that could make a positive difference - praise and compliments for the bullpen ladies. As I was walking away, she stopped me, called me back and asked that our team return to the Mike Peppe meet. A great reminder to me that sometimes a genuine compliment can go a long way.
Is our team perfect? Are we the biggest, or the fastest, do we have the most wins? Probably not, but what my children have gotten out of BKYS is far more important than any of that. The relationships that my children have been exposed to through swimming with BKYS are invaluable.
This year you started the buddies. I truly hope this continues because this is what being a part of a team is about. I watched a swimmer who scores points in every meet give one of her multiple heat ribbons to her buddy who otherwise never would have gotten one. I know my own children loved leaving treats and well wishes to their buddies. Mine wears the cap she got from her buddy with pride. These relationships blossomed but never would have come about if they hadn't been planted.
I also wanted to point out some other things I witnessed this year that I believe are why we are the best.
Younger swimmers cheering at the end of the lane for a senior swimmer. This happened at the beginning of the season before high school season started but then I saw it again this weekend. You rarely see this with other teams and you always see this with our team when we are all at a meet together. (Our son) idolizes the "big boys". This weekend alone multiple parents sent me pictures of him with their sons "hanging" together between races. I think this is because we have great families at BKYS but also because we have coaches who encourage these kinds of relationships.Pretty cool, huh ? (Yes Lew, I said huh). This is so much of what we try to teach in & out of the pool at Buckeye. It's what makes swimming so unique, and amazing. You just can't get this kind of interaction in 'team' sports where kids are only with their group of approximately 15 teammates of the same gender and age.
(Our kids) have made steady improvements, as you pointed out during conferences, with their swimming. However, they have become better athletes, sportsmen/women and people because of BKYS.
