Leah Adkins, Sophia Arnold, Samantha Blackburn, Nanami Campbell, Phillip Johnson, Amanda Jones, Samantha Jones, Jeanette Lopeman, Nicholas Mountz, Nathan Reynolds, Christopher Sabharwal, Sai Vidur Senthil Nathan, Sai Vidyud Senthil Nathan and Brody Van Frayen!
Swimmer of the meet recognition was so tight that we had to calculate in practice attendance and percent of time dropped!
First up from the UA meet is Brody Van Frayen! Brody had what we like to call a 'break out' meet, making huge drops in his swims from just a few weeks prior. Brody is a quiet listener at practice and tries very hard to apply our stroke concepts. Next, also from the UA meet is Sai Vidyud! Sai swam his first ever 500 free (and in that race his first 200) at UA and also had big drops in his events from just a few weeks ago. Sai is a diligent learner at practice and a great communicator! Also, from the UA meet, Amanda Jones! Mandy is one of our toughest workers and has been training with speed and a great attitude towards making stroke improvements. She also had huge drops from her swims just a few weeks prior! Last, from the OSU meet, Christopher Sabharwal! Christopher not only continues to have time drops each meet, he also competed in his first mile. The coaches were very impressed with how composed he was and his ability to follow the race plan - he descended his 500's and negative split the race! Congratulations swimmers!!
We hit on two very simple and very effective freestyle and backstroke drills. The progress in free was more than obvious at the UASC meet making us very proud coaches! The backstroke drill was added at the UA meet and is making some impact on their skills at practice.
At UA & OSU, we asked the swimmers to remember the skills that we asked them to work on and improve. Interestingly, several could not recall these quickly when asked at practice a few days later. Keeping a swimmer log book would help resolve this. After each practice, swimmers should jot notes on how they felt at practice and what went well, what didn’t (can use the commit app for this). After each meet, swimmers should write down their times, feelings/thoughts and coaches comments on what they need to improve. For those using the commit app, we will start adding meets into the practice log so they can use this for their notes. If you are having trouble logging in to commit, please email.
Each swimmer should have completed a goal sheet. We will begin setting up meetings with our swimmers to review these and go over areas to focus on to help them attain their goals.
Everyone should have a water bottle at practice. Everyone should have athletic or running shoes on Monday through Thursday.
We spoke to the kids several weeks ago about this and are finally ready to put it into play. We would like each swimmer to give a 2-5 minute presentation to their teammates on what motivates them. This can be a video or speech but cannot simply be a song. If they utilize a song they will need to analyze it further on why it is motivational. We will help the swimmers with their presentation and will approve all before they are presented. By doing this our swimmer should gain a deeper understanding of their passion for swimming. This will also give them an opportunity to be a leader in their group and should take quite a few of our kids out of their comfort zone. Last, we will end up starting each practice with some very positive motivation over the course of 6 weeks. The kids will receive the parameters for this assignment in writing.
On these days after arriving at the pool we would like our Scarlet swimmers to head straight to the dryland room. Please take all gear and bags up to the room as well. Parents are welcome up there until a coach arrives (if there’s room you are welcome to stay & do dryland with us). This will help keep the pool deck quiet(er) so that coaches can concentrate on the groups in the water. This is not necessary for our Thursday practice as we are first!

Also, now that all groups are at the same location - with some overlap in start and end times - please remind your swimmers to be respectful of the groups still in the water who need to be able to hear the coaches. Swimmers should put their bags on the North (step) side of the pool. Parents, we are asking that you please use the South side or deep end of the pool and not the shallow end. The shallow end gets very crowded with swimmers, equipment, and coaches. You are always welcome to bring your own chair to practice if you are worried that there may not be enough seating.
Congratulations to all of our swimmers for some GREAT swims at our first meets of the season!

Qualifications are NOT based on swimming performance. Rather, they are evaluated in regard to community service and academics. Students do not need to be planning to swim in college to be considered for the scholarships. However, applicants must be CURRENT MEMBERS of a USA Swimming club in Central Ohio.
For the past 2 years we have been able to award scholarships to eight local athletes annually. We are proud of this and hope that you will make your swimmers aware of this opportunity for recognition of their community service and academic efforts.

Each family does need to respond as to their availability, do not assume that we know what you are doing! The first meet is October 7-9 in Dayton & is very appropriate for anyone that has ever competed in a swim meet. If you are new to swim meets, please discuss with your coach whether or not you should hold off for the October 22-23 meet at Worthington.
You can also go to our website for updated meet information here: http://buckeyeswimclub.com/Meet%20Schedule.html
We are looking forward to a terrific meet season!
- All swimmers must have a parent or guardian sign a use waiver before their first practice. Allow 15 minutes for this.
- Swimmers should wait in the lobby until a coach arrives. At no time should a swimmer be on the pool deck without supervision. Please try to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of practice.
- Parents are welcome to watch practice from the top row of the bleachers. MC Fitness is very strict about our interaction with non USA Swimming members during practice time. (This is actually due to USA Swimming insurance guidelines). Once the kids are in the water, parents cannot speak to swimmers or coaches and must either be in the bleachers or wait in the lobby.
- Swimmers are not permitted to use member locker rooms or towels. Even swimmers whose parents are members. When our swimmers arrive to use the facility for Buckeye, they must behave as if they are a guest of the facility.
- Please limit team locker room use to 5 minutes prior to practice and a quick and quiet 10 minutes after practice. No climbing on lockers or into lockers. The locker room is not our playground. Always leave it neater than you found it.

We have received a few questions about how to set up monthly payments. We are in the process of getting everyone's accounts set up on QuickBooks. We will use Intuit Merchant Services to process all electronic payments (credit cards, echecks, etc.). Once we do that you will simply need to swing by the end of a practice to get started. We will have specific days available to do that beginning the week of September 12.

Pullbuoy (if under 110 pounds, purchase a junior pullbuoy)
Mesh Bag to carry it in
Seniors and Juniors also need a snorkel and sculling paddles
DO NOT BUY at local retailers. Little known fact the Speedo product sold at retailers like Target and Dicks is recreation quality and not really suitable for swim team.
All items can be purchased here: http://www.swimoutlet.com/bkys - click on 'Practice Gear'
SwimOutlet has a distribution center in West Chester. Most items arrive in two days with regular ground shipping.
If you decide to buy team apparel while visiting swimoutlet.com, please make sure you purchase all team items in team colors. The backpack must be silver/gray, team suit is red, the team sweats are in red/black, etc. No pink, neon green or other color team gear can have our logo or be utilized at swim meets.
The most popular goggles on the market are Speedo Vanquishers. Mirrored or metallic goggles are not necessary for indoor swimming.

The schedule for Juniors includes an optional practice on Mondays. This is important for attendance calculations. It is recommended that Juniors attend the five practices offered Tuesdays Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays.
Sunday, July 31, 2016
Important changes to note:
- The fundraising fee is required, but gives you an opportunity to fund raise the cost of your typical fees. You can always write a check for fundraising instead of participating.
- We have at least two travel meets on the schedule. One in March for the Senior group, and one in April for our age groupers (in Clearwater, FL with time standards). Those that attend will have the opportunity to put 50% of monies raised over their minimum in a travel account to help with the cost of attending those meets.
- The Scarlet group fee is for this WINTER, we expect spring and summer training to run at about $500-600.
- When you add in the extras we charged last year (fundraising, MC Fitness surcharge) the increase in fees is between 2-5%
- We will only collect registration and meet fees at active.com. This saves us about 3% on processing. You can either set up monthly electronic installment payments with me or pay by check. These payments are outlined on the fee info page of the packet.
- The booster club has fantastic ideas for helping you raise that fundraising fee. We want to make it as painless as possible.
- The website will be updated ASAP. It is still under construction!
- Thanks to some creativity from MC we did not have to do anything extremely weird with the schedule. Everyone fits into the space we have.
- The registration fee is good for one year.
- Register online this week and save $10!
Based on tryouts the Scarlet group is FULL - DO NOT WAIT TO REGISTER!
- Send us a brief testimonial to use on our website, or review Buckeye on our Facebook page.
- Tell your friends to join. We have a huge need for high school swimmers and will make it as easy as we can (schedules) for them to be a part of Buckeye. We would also like to see more fall sport kids join our Columbus North Silver program!
Friday, July 29, 2016
Friday: 8 a.m.
Saturday & Sunday: 7:45 a.m.
There will only be one warm-up lane available during the meet. No other pools are available for warm-up / cool-down. Please cool-down immediately after your swim and talk to a coach AFTER you cool-down.

Our friends at Unified Aquatic Club is hosting the next Fitter & Faster clinic in Columbus. Not only does it look like a terrific clinic, but I think it'd be great for us to go support another small team!
This clinic coming up will be led by two Olympians and will focus on fast freestyle, butterfly and underwater dolphin kicking. The producer of the clinics (Fitter and Faster Swim Tour) has provided me with a discount code for our swim families to use. Sign up today and use discount code: COLUMBUS to save 10% on the registrations. The code stops working in 3 days (July 30th).
Elite clinicians, Christine Magnuson and Peter Vanderkaay, are leading two clinics to teach participants how to maintain proper body position for butterfly with excellent rhythm and tempo! PLUS, learn how to make the most of your streamline and underwater kicking to give you the edge on your competition!
Click the links below to learn more and to sign up before the clinics are promoted to the public:
Ages 11 & under: Fast Freestyle, Butterfly and Underwater Dolphin Kicking
Ages 12 & up: High Performance Freestyle, Butterfly and Underwater Dolphin Kicking
This is a terrific opportunity for us to learn and have a fun day.
