Slack Best Practices

First, thank you to everyone for adopting Slack so readily and providing feedback for what you do and do not like about the app.  We still have a lot to learn about how to best use it and your feedback is helping tremendously.

The first responses we received was a desire to keep important announcements in one place.  To do this we changed the name of the #general folder to #team-announcements.  The only things posted there should be time sensitive information that the entire team needs.  Please adhere to this, so that everyone keeps their notifications on for this channel.

We have the following additional channels to help communicate with smaller groups of people.
Group Channels
#Scarlet (Scarlet 1, 2, 3 & Gold), #Silver (Silver Comp, Rec and Intro) & #Senior (Senior, Junior & NPG).  These channels will auto pull the practice schedule off our team calendar each week.  It is a long pull, but easy to scroll right on past if you aren't interested in reading it.  These folders will also automatically post as soon as I make a change to a practice on our google calendar.  So if a practice is canceled you'll see a post come up much like this:

Scarlet APP [9:06 AM]
Calendar event was cancelled
Scarlet 1 Bonus Practice
Feb 23 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Columbus North Athletic Club, 888 E Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43229, USA

Swim Meets
#swim-meets
In the week leading up to the meet we will post any updates such as psych sheets and warm-up schedules.

Pictures
#pictures
This is a safe place to throw any pictures from team events, practices, etc.

Everything Else
#random
Anything you feel like sharing can go here.  This channel was used to find a team suit this past week-end.  Great use of Slack!

MANAGING NOTIFICATIONS
Not everyone wants Slack pinging every time something is posted.  You can change your notifications based on what is important to you.  We think it is a good idea to keep notifications turned on for #team-announcements.  Your teammates will get better at using it wisely as we learn.

To manage your notifications go into your settings (swipe left on iOS, tap the three dots on Android) tap notifications then choose your preferences.  You can set different notifications for mobile and desktop.  You can also have notifications emailed to you.

DO NOT DISTURB HOURS
Our do not disturb hours are currently set for 9 pm to 8 am.  Notifications do not go out between those hours.

Extra T-Shirts

The Pollock Family has donated about 60 t-shirts sporting the new team logo to our Booster Club. The shirts come in a variety of colors and sizes. Each family will have their chance to pick ONE shirt on Monday or Tuesday at practice. On Wednesday, any shirts remaining will be available to anyone. A donation to the booster club for your shirt is optional. The kids are now receiving their team t-shirts that were made exclusively for kids and coaches. Kast-A-Way has not yet printed our red t-shirts, if you would like to order one I suggest you call today. These shirts are being printed on a light weight t-shirt from Sport Tek.

Coach of the Year

Dear Coach, Hope this email finds you well and enjoying the summer. We are writing today on behalf of the upcoming feature film COACH OF THE YEAR: an independent, kid-friendly sports comedy feature film based on the inspiring true story of a rag tag swim team that tries to win a state championship…without a pool to practice in. Director Dave Stott, who has coached swimming for twenty years, hopes that with this film, we will entertain and inspire kids all over the country to learn to swim. Another goal of this film is to raise awareness about drowning as the leading cause of accidental deaths and to help kids all over the country learn to swim safely. The underdog story has been told before, but not for our sport. This is a movie for swimmers (and would-be swimmers), made by people who know the sport intimately and love it passionately, and we’d love for you to be involved. We wanted to ask you and your team to help spread the word about COACH OF THE YEAR, and get you & you

Is my child ready to swim meets?

We had a coaches discussion on this  - and yes, all of our Elite group swimmers are ready for meets.  Please look at the meet calendar and sign up for the days that you are available.  We will pick events that are appropriate for your swimmer.  We pick events that your child can do well and will build their confidence.  We also believe strongly in placing your child in events that will challenge them.  While we strive for excellence, making a mistake in an event is OK and can be a great learning experience.  Trying and failing is teaches a lot more  about your abilities than not trying at all.
