Online Entry Features

I am learning the new online entry system along with you, and will send along features as I figure them out.
  • I can change any entry - make additions, deletions and changes if I feel that there are better event options for your swimmer.
  • Your credit card is not billed until the day I finalize entries - this is typically the day that I send entries to the host. You are also billed only for the events that the coaching staff approves, so if that happens to be fewer events than you initially chose, you won't be over billed.
  • After finalize entries I send an email to each participant. It has a nifty little summary of your events.
  • You receive a receipt, via email, of your entry fees that are billed to your credit card.
  • You can access the list of team meets via our online entry portal at any time.
  • You can access a nice summary of your events simply by logging in to your account on active.

Paralympic Trials

If you were able to follow some of the Facebook and Twitter updates, then you will have read that Richard had an incredible Trials meet.  After 8 years away from the pool, Richard came out of retirement when his disability class was reinstated into Paralympic Sports. After just over 12 months of training, we were thrilled to see Richard get near his best time in the 200 free (dropping 10 seconds form his season best), Mile and 200 fly. He also got a lifetime best in the 100 back and set a new American Record in both the 100 back and the 50 from his 100 split.  He also achieved the PanAmerican Record for s14's in the 100 back!!  Richard won all four of his events, however he did not get his World Rankings high enough in the two Paralympic contested events (200 free & 100 back) to earn a spot on the US Team.

Richard plans to continue to train and to work towards the next level of time standards in US Para Swimming so that he can earn a spot on National Teams in the future.  We are currently planning the next two years with making it to the 2014 Pan Pacific Champs in Australia becoming a large focus of Richards training.  Richard, his family, and I appreciate all of the well wishes and support from the team over the past weeks.  Thank You!

I am going to try to scour You Tube for some good video of the athletes that made the team so that everyone can get a good idea of the athleticism and skill of these incredibly talented athletes.  As I find these, I will post to Facebook.  Please take a moment to view these as they are posted to get a better understanding of the Paralympic movement.

Silver Summer Coaching Staff

Due to some coaching changes and schedule conflicts, we have had to adjust the coaching schedules for the Silver 1 & 2 groups. An impromptu meeting was held with Silver parents at practice this morning to explain some of the changes.  Please, if you have a question or concern, address me directly.  Here are the coaching assignments for the remainder of the summer:

Mondays 5-6:30 Coach Denise
Tuesdays & Thursdays - small groups - Coach Angie
Tuesday, Thursday & Friday long course and Wednesdays 5-6:30  - Coach Laurie

I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with our younger swimmers this summer!  Here are some of the tidbits that I passed along to the parents this morning:

  • While it has been a few years, I do have loads of experience working with younger swimmers.  Please be patient while I resurrect my 10 & under mojo :)  I need to rework my communication skills a bit for the group and am working hard on pulling up my old skill set there.
  • If you feel that I am not communicating well with your child, please do not hesitate to let me know.
  • I would like you to send your children to me 5-10 minutes before practice starts (even if it appears that I am busy with another group). This gives me an opportunity to talk to them, get to know them outside of the pool, and put my 10 & under hat on for the day.
  • I have planned the next 5 weeks of training for the kids and will be coordinating closely with Denise and Angie on their development.
Unfortunately, Coach JJ has handed in his resignation to seek other opportunities.  We did not want to see Coach JJ go and will miss him.

I have already begun to interview coaches inside and outside of the club for the position of Head Silver Coach beginning this fall.

Thank You

Thank you to every parent that helped coach Lew this week-end by getting your swimmer to the blocks on time!  Coach Lew was a one man show most of the week-end in some pretty tough meet conditions. I certainly appreciate knowing that we have the kind of parents that will step up and help out when needed!  If you would like to thank Coach Lew, he takes his coffee black and is at Columbus North at 6:30 am on Mondays and Wednesdays :)

Bubble Update

The bubble is finally down and in storage in Massachusetts!  Work to build a pool in Columbus continues.  We are still looking for large scale investors and investment.  Please pass this along to anyone that you think could help on a  large scale.

Cold Water Gear

As promised at practice today - cold water swim gear for our Silver kids to help with the chilly temps at Northland.  If you can find anything made of Polyolefin (especially a swim shirt) that would be a first choice.  Cold water gear should be purchased to fit snug but not tight. Please follow this link if you choose to purchase from Swim Outlet (our boosters will receive a rebate through his link):

Here are three products in a decent price range:
Aqua Sphere Juniors' Stingray Core Warmer $26.95
Dakin Neo Insulator Rash Guard $38.95
Finis Thermal Training Shirt $44.95

As I told the kids today, one of my fondest memories is a steaming cup of hot chocolate after morning practice (while I loved long course training I did not tolerate the cold water well at all).

Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

A certain daughter complained to her father about her life and how things have been so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and she wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that just as one problem was solved, another arose.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed the fire on high.

Soon the three pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the other he placed eggs, and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter sucked her teeth and impatiently wondered what he was trying to do. She had problems, and he was making this strange concoction.

In half an hour, he walked over to the range and turned down the fire. He pulled the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then he ladled the coffee out and placed the liquid in a bowl. Turning to her, he asked, “Darling, what do you see?”

Smartly, she replied, “Carrots, eggs, and coffee.”

He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Her face frowned from the strength of the coffee. Humbly, she asked, “What does it mean Father?”

He explained. Each of them faced the same adversity, 212 degrees of boiling water. However, each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. But after going through boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg was fragile. A thin outer shell protected a liquid center. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The coffee beans were unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they became stronger and richer.

“Which are you”, he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?”

Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

Are you the carrot that seems hard, but with the smallest amount of pain, adversity or heat, you wilt and become soft with no strength?

Are you the egg, which starts off with a malleable heart? A fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a divorce, or a layoff, you became hardened and stiff? Your shell looks the same, but you are bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and heart internally.

Or are you like the coffee bean? The bean does not get its peak flavor and robustness until it reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the water gets the hottest, it just tastes better.

When things are their worst, you get better, When people talk the most, your praises increase. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, your worship elevates to another level.

How do you handle adversity? Are you the carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?
